Kansas City metro launches 18th annual Green Commute Challenge

WAY TO GO is inviting residents, employers and schools across the Kansas City metro to join a free monthlong contest Oct. 1-31 that rewards greener trips. The challenge aims to cut ozone-polluting emissions, ease fuel costs and build on rising transit and rideshare participation.

The details: - Eligible participants must be at least 18 years old. - The challenge is open across nine counties: Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami and Wyandotte in Kansas; and Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray in Missouri. - Green trips include cycling, carpooling, walking, rolling, scooting and riding transit. - Prizes will be awarded in three categories: individual, team and local government. - Each week highlights a different transportation mode. - Week 1 runs Oct. 4-10 for carpool and vanpool trips. - Week 2 runs Oct. 11-17 for walking and rolling. - Week 3 runs Oct. 18-24 for bus or streetcar transit. - Week 4 runs Oct. 25-31 for two-wheels. - Two winners each week will receive prize packages donated by local businesses for trips recorded in the featured mode. - There will be only one winner for the first three days of the challenge. - To join, participants create a profile on the WAY TO GO desktop or mobile app at my.waytogokc.org, join a team and start logging green trips beginning Oct. 1. - Registration is available at the challenge sign-up page.
