Drought alert expires Sept. 1

MoDNR will continue to monitor weather impacts

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, SEPT. 02, 2026-- Due to improving conditions, the state’s Climate and Weather Committee voted during its Aug 10 meeting to recommend the drought alert be allowed to expire.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will continue to monitor weather impacts within the state after the expiration of the state’s current drought alert on Sept. 1. The drought alert was active for 11 months and was originally established by Executive Order 25-29 on Sept. 22, 2025.

In accordance with the Missouri Drought Mitigation and Response Plan, MoDNR’s Water Resources Center, in consultation with the State Climatologist and the National Weather Service, will continue to actively monitor the potential development of drought conditions within Missouri.

“If areas of the state experience deteriorating drought conditions, the Climate and Weather Committee will meet as needed to determine if a new recommendation is warranted,” said Kurt Schaefer, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Drought alerts direct state agencies to work together in providing resources for drought relief and for the coordination of certain state operations to provide as much assistance as possible to impacted communities.
