Department of Natural Resources awards $2.86 million in assistance to Bunceton
City will make extensive wastewater improvements
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, SEPT. 15, 2026 - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $2.86 million in financial assistance to the city of Bunceton for upgrades to its wastewater treatment system. The city expects to complete the project by November 2027.
In addition to a major wastewater treatment system overhaul, the project includes the city refinancing its refunded bonds that were issued to finance design costs associated with the project. When complete, the project will improve water quality and protect the Stephens Branch of the Petite Saline Creek by reducing pollutants and untreated discharges.
Project funding consists of a $1.1 million loan and a $1.7 million grant, both through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. Additionally, the city has secured a Community Development Block Grant for $449,287. The department estimates its funding will save the city’s ratepayers more than $1.7 million in principal and approximately $540,000 in interest over the loan’s 20-year term.
“While we often take it for granted, adequate drinking water and wastewater infrastructure is critical to the quality of life of every Missourian and the sustainability of communities and industries throughout the state,” said Jake Buxton, director of the Department of Natural Resources.
The department’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund finances improvements to wastewater treatment facilities, sewer collection system rehabilitation and extensions, and combined sewer overflow corrections. The fund also finances security, efficiency and conservation measures. Communities that borrow from the fund benefit from the below-market interest rate and from a department project manager’s assistance throughout the project.
The department is committed to assisting Missouri communities with water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects. Through its Financial Assistance Center, the department provides funding opportunities for qualified communities with water quality, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure needs. This project will be funded wholly or in part with monies received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
