MDC hosts beginner furbearer trapping course Oct. 24 at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center

Body

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Learn the tools, tricks and time-honored tradition of furbearer trapping through hands-on instruction with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in Blue Springs.

MDC and the Missouri Trappers Association are teaming up to provide an introductory furbearer trapping class at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 24. The course will be led by Trevor Sousley, District 7 Director and Public Relations Chairman for the Missouri Trappers Association.

Furbearer trapping provides an alternative way to extend the hunting season and continue a rich outdoor tradition in Missouri. Trapping skills are also useful to control mammal populations that cause decline in other animal populations or create nuisance wildlife problems.

Course participants will learn how trappers use their knowledge of animal behavior and habitat through setting mock traps and a demonstration on the safe handling and identification of furbearing wildlife. Specific instruction will be provided on the use and application of footholds, body grip traps, cable restraints, dog proofs, anchoring systems, different set types, legality of traps and where to trap. Tips for fur handling and marketing will also be shared.

The state of Missouri, unlike many other states, does not require trappers to attend a mandatory trapper education class before they are allowed to trap. This free course will help a new trapper learn the ropes from professionals before setting out alone.

Online registration is available at Events | Missouri Department of Conservation and is required for each participant in advance of the course.

More information about trapping can be found at Trapping | Missouri Department of Conservation.
